An Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
