The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
